Emily

I’m almost certain my eyes aren’t still swollen from crying when I leave Warren’s office, but I still receive a few curious glances. Even though his office has windows that give everyone a complete view of the inside of his office, I still feel like I was caught sleeping with the boss.

I don’t know what to make of it all. Warren is so different today. He’s sweet and patient and he let me talk. I didn’t realize how much I needed to talk about things. About Caleb.

I feel calm but emotionally raw. It’s a good thing Warren cleared my schedule for the day because I doubt I could focus on work after that. It’s more than just my breakdown. I’m also can’t help but think about Warren. He was so gruff and impatient the day before and now he is being so friendly. It's all quite confusing. And I still can’t believe I broke down like that in front of my boss, whom I knew for less than 48 hours.

It’s easy to find the sandwich shop Warren told me about. Normally I wouldn’t accept his offer to pay, but a decent meal sounds so satisfying. I haven’t eaten a proper meal since coming to Boston.

When I see the prices at the sandwich shop, I’m really glad I accepted his card, because I’m not able to pay for it myself.

I order a sandwich and a hot chocolate for myself. Warren is right– the food is delicious. I savor every bite and I’m sad when it’s done.

I lean back in my seat, sighing contentedly. When I see Warren come into the shop, I sit up straight. His eyes search the place and it isn’t long before they meet mine. He walks over to me, immediately.

“You probably want your card back,” I remark. I dig it out of my purse and hand it to him. “Thank you for lunch. You were right. The food here is amazing.”

“I’m glad you like it. Do you mind if I sit?”

I’m a little surprised. I figured he wanted to make sure I didn’t forget to return his card to him. But I nod. “Of course. Sit. Please.”

He sits across from me, but he can’t quite make eye contact. I don’t know why, but he seems a little nervous to be here.

“I have a proposition for you,” he said. “I want to help you find an apartment in Boston and help you settle in. I can also help you with your real estate license. And I can introduce you to people to help build your network. Real estate is my business and I can make sure you have every‐ thing you need to have a successful, prosperous career.”

I understand the value of what he is offering. If I let him help me and follow his advice, then I wouldn’t have to worry about financial insecurity ever again. I could live comfortably and I could provide for my parents when they decided to retire. It’s more than I can ever hope for.
